FUJI DS-7

by John Henshall

The Fuji DS-7 has good colorimetry and sensitivity, three focus settings, 640x480 pixel resolution, a 'live' color LCD viewfinder, and 30 shot capacity in standard JPEG format on removable 'SmartMedia' 2MB flash storage cards only 37x45x0.75mm thick (1.75x1.56x0.03 inches). It even has an NTSC (US and Japanese video standard) output jack, though this will be blocked off by a rubber bung for Europe. I suggest you remove the bung, for most modern PAL tv sets can also accept NTSC without a problem.

Köln railway bridge and the Dom, from the ferry across the Rhine to the Köln Messe for Photokina. Picture made using Fuji DS-7 digital camera. Very dull day.

Fuji supplied me with one of these cameras from Japan via Germany for a 'sneak preview' in my session 'Digital Photo - Creating Images for the Internet' at the Seybold conference on digital publishing in San Francisco on 11 September - a whole week before the camera's official launch at Photokina. It is a joy to use, though I had to be especially vigilant to ensure that it did not 'walk'. The complete kit, including rechargeable batteries and an adaptor which enables the SmartMedia cards to be read in a laptop computer's PC Card slot, will have an SRP of $800 or £599 in the UK. Availability will be mid October.
